You Will Regret It

ff I actually had second thoughts about posting this picture because it feels extremely out-of-character for her, but I have a lot to say about the process and story. Besides, maybe if I ramble enough I will find a way to convince myself that this concept art isn't OOC after all, just ridiculously edgy.

But hey, edgy art has a place in the Misfit Hunters universe. The story may be fairly light-hearted for the most part, but remember that the entire thing revolves around murder and revenge, not to mention that a few characters of mine are really talented at putting a damper on the mood. We're looking at you, Liz.  

I've drawn this specific facial expression three times, the first time being when I was doing an expression study. The second time, I just draw a slightly larger version in my pocketbook for the heck of it. This is the third time, where I was scrambling for concept art to draw and I remembered how much I like this angry face, so I made a colored version. It feels really out-of-character, provided you know the character, but at the same time, not OOC at all. Everybody has their limits, and when pushed to them we can do really shocking and maybe horrible things. Please remember that "gets really angry when pushed too far" is a horrible personality trait, because that's true for nearly everyone. It doesn't make your character stand out. What you need to do is define what it means for them to be "pushed too far". For Lisa, it's being cornered or threatening her close friends. A scene like this could occur if, say, Raven's getting beat up by an enemy and Lisa's there to stop the fight. I think in this scene, she just saw a friend get injured or killed in cold blood, and she's not about to let such a crime slide.

So I hope you guys don't mind my sharing this random character development advice. The thing is, I really do see the "gets angry when pushed too far trait" very often on the bios of characters belonging to amateur artists. I think I've even used it before. Heck, I used it in one of Lisa's early bios, back when she was a half-demon half-angel with a nebulous personality and kaleidoscope eyes.
